St. David’s Round Rock Medical Center and Central Market Host “Healthful Thanks,” a Healthy Thanksgiving Cooking Demonstration
St. David’s Round Rock Medical Center and Central Market will host “Healthful Thanks,” a healthy Thanksgiving cooking demonstration on Thursday, November 5, 2009, from 11:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at the CHASCO Family YMCA located on 1812 North Mays Street in Round Rock.
A “Healthful Thanks” will include cooking demonstrations on how to prepare a healthier holiday meal from one of the top chefs at Central Market. The demonstration will provide healthy alternatives to traditional dishes, such as roasted turkey, gravy and bread stuffing as well as new food ideas, such as orange ginger whipped sweet potatoes and green bean and shitake mushroom stir fry.
“St. David’s Round Rock Medical Center is proud to partner with Central Market and the CHASCO Family YMCA in order to provide healthy Thanksgiving meal ideas to the Round Rock community,” Deborah Ryle, St. David’s Round Rock Medical Center Chief Executive Officer, said. “Not only will people learn how to incorporate healthier alternatives into their Thanksgiving meals—it will be fun!”
Attendees will receive recipes of the dishes prepared during the demonstration, which were created in conjunction with Tarie Beldin, a registered and licensed dietitian at St. David’s Round Rock Medical Center. They will also get to enjoy a healthy Thanksgiving meal for lunch.
“Creating a healthy Thanksgiving meal can easily be accomplished through simple substitutions, choosing to include foods that matter the most to you and your family,” Beldin said. “Thanksgiving is the half-way point of the holiday season and there are still many more opportunities to overindulge at holiday parties and family meals leading into the New Year. Even just an extra 100 calories a day can lead to a 10-pound weight gain in a year, which is why it’s important to find healthy substitutes wherever possible.”
In addition, attendees will receive travel fitness tips, such as from a certified YMCA personal trainer.
